Typically you'll switch between the map screen and the 3D view relatively often, sometimes plotting waypoints in the map for your own platoon and others that may be under your control. Whether you control the tank from the personal point of view of the commander or from the external observer's position is mostly a matter of taste.
Personally I like to be in the commander's seat because that one gives you the best situational awareness, and control over most stuff (but you still have to give up a few other things, just like in real life).
